A Master of Laws (LLM) degree is an advanced law degree designed to be studied by those who already possess a first law degree or an equivalent qualification. LLM degree programs typically take a year to complete full-time or two years when studied part-time. There are a wide range of LLM programs available, including general and specialized LLM degrees. These can either be studied at a brick and mortar university or online. Some colleges and universities over accelerated LLM programs and these can be studied over a total of 12 weeks.
In recent years, an increasing number of lawyers have chosen to pursue LLM programs. The increasing complexity of today’s legal systems has resulted in lawyers not just seeking additional training but requiring it to be competent in their place of work. While an LLM degree will aid a lawyer in increasing their familiarity with the legal system in their own country or in that of another country, it can also be used as a stepping stone towards teaching law and to help individuals to strengthen their core study skills, such as writing and research.
Before rushing into LLM programs, it is necessary for a prospective student to consider whether the expenditure of their own time and money will prove worthwhile. The cost of studying for an LLM program does not just include tuition fees but also the cost of course books, travel, accommodation if studying away from home, and other living costs. A full-time LLM on site degree may take an individual away from their current paid work and it is for this reason that many lawyers in employment opt for online LLM programs that can be studied part-time. It is important to note that funding may be available to prospective LLM students. However, funding is usually limited and only available to students in dire financial need and/or to those studying for specific qualifications.
There is no ideal time in which to undertake an LLM program. Some individuals do so immediately following completing their first law degree. However, others wait until they have been practicing law for several years.
In general, those looking towards pursuing an LLM program early on in their careers should know precisely where they are heading in their careers. They should know the legal subject area in which they wish to specialize, the city or country in which they wish to practice and the type of practice they wish to join following completion of their LLM programs.
Prospective masters of law students who have decided on a specialism should ideally study for a specialist masters degree in law. A wide array of specialist programs are available, including LLM programs in Finance Law, Corporate Law, Computer Law, Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, Media Law, Public Law, Medical Law and Tax Law.
Students who successfully pass their LLM online or on site studies can go on to enter into paid employment or further study. Many LLM programs, whether thesis-based or course-based, can be used as a qualification for PhD programs in law. A LLM program student can often benefit from receiving detailed careers advice from the university or college at which they have studied for their degree.
